Topology Optimization of a Steel-Aluminium-Hybrid for an Automotive Body Structure

David Funke, Imperia

Since several years Imperia GmbH works together with partners in the field of composite castings for automotive hybrid body structures. Using the combination of steel- or alumium stamping within the casting of alumium or magnesium alloys, very high structural performances can be indicated. The advantage of light metals’ less weight as well as the high strength and ductility of steel will be taken. Therefor a rib-structure of aluminium is casted in an open, thin-walled sheet metal to prevent the origination of local buckling. The wide range of parameters for hybrid structures makes the use of topology optimization obvious and shows its high potential.

After a presentation of the forward-looking and innovative concept of the steel-aluminium-hybrid, the dimensioning of a rib-structure by using topology optimization will be shown. The procedure will be exemplified by an automotive body application.
