Optimization of Typical Kirchhoff Automotive Parts with OptiStruct

Maria Schmitt, Kirchhoff

In the automotive industry development time gets shorter with every new series. Therefore optimization software is needed to reach the final design as soon as possible. In addition, time saving is important for suppliers during the offer phase to be competitive in the market. Even in this early phase of a project OEM ’s already expect a high degree of development.

Focus of all developments is to minimize mass considering given performance targets. As cars have become heavier with every model due to increased quantity of comfort electronic and safety equipment for passengers, it is necessary to reduce the mass of other components.

The use of new materials and alloys is common for many years now, but hybrid parts find more and more their way into the automotive industry. At Kirchhoff Automotive hybrid solutions made of plastics and steel gain in importance especially for frontends because of their lower mass and the possibility to integrate functions. For these hybrid parts but also for chassis and structural parts Kirchhoff Automotive uses optimization software to find the best design regarding mass, performance and costs.

Scope of this presentation is to show the use of Optistruct during the development of typical Kirchhoff Automotive parts.
