Customisation of nCode DesignLife to Model Fatigue of
Engineered Polymers
Peter Heyes; Stephan Vervoort; Jeff Mentley, HBM
nCode DesignLife is an industry-standard software package
for fatigue life prediction of engineering components and
structures. The majority of metal fatigue life predictions
reasonably make the assumption that material properties are
homogeneous and isotropic. These assumptions are quite inappropriate
for predicting the life of fibre reinforced plastics, the
fatigue strength of which is strongly dependent on fibre orientation
and density. In this work we show how the Python-based customisation
capability in nCode DesignLife can be used to predict the
life of components made from engineered polymers (plastic
matrix with short fibres). This presentation illustrates how
Python can be used to deploy new or proprietary fatigue analysis
methods within an organisation.
