Vertical Dynamics of an Offroad Racecar
Dirk Bordien, Volkswagen Motorsport
Volkswagen takes part in rally raid motorsport with its RaceTouareg
since 2005. The most important race is the
annual Dakar Rally, named after its destination in Africa.
Since 2009 the Dakar
is held in South America.
Over a distance of 9.000 kilometers and 4.000
meters altitude through Argentina and Chile,
the legendary Dakar Rally offers the toughest
test in motorsport. Hard,
stony and thus difficult-to-drive-on ground,
soft sand in the “Atacama”, the world’s
driest desert with the highest dune fields on earth, as well
as extreme
passages through water pose a challenge to
driver and car.
In 2009 Volkswagen scored a demanding double
victory and the first triumph of a diesel-powered
racecar ever.
One of the most demanding challenges in offroad-vehicle
development is the acquisition of reliable
loads. 2008 VWM starts a pilot-project
with MotionSolve to get loads from
MBD-simulations. As real offroad-tracks
are almost impossible to digitalize, VWM analyses
a simplified test-scenario of
a vertical jump. This presentation will
discuss important model features like spring-damper
system and a very simplified
tire-representation. It will also show
the close match for the final comparison of test
and simulation data. With HW10.0
and the partner product FTire the project
will improve regarding tire-model and horizontal
dynamic.
