Simulation of Containment-Tests of Fast-Spinning Rotors
With RADIOSS
Heiko Beck, Ingenieurbüro Huß und Feickert
Containment tests of turbochargers used on ships engines
or in power plants are required by Classification
Societies. The objective of the test is to demonstrate that
the housing
of the turbocharger is of sound design and
capable to satisfactorily contain fractured rotating parts
inside the casing. In the
last years these tests that were normally carried
out on a test bed during the type approval procedure of the
turbochargers
were increasingly supplemented and partly even
replaced by dynamic simulation. The short simulation time
and the highly
dynamic kinematics of the Containment load
case make high demands on the discretization as well as on
the boundary conditions
applied to the model. At IHF a FE-model was
built up for a Containment simulation with RADIOSS.
