Optimization Driven Design Process of a Composite Helicopter
Structure
Markus Schemat, Altair; Jörg Löffler, Eurocopter
The current product design process is influenced by multiple
technical and economic aspects. One of the
major issues is to shorten the development times. Contrary
to this, the complexity
of the solution is continuously increasing
due to the adoption of new technologies, new materials and
the demand for a higher
grade of quality. In order to manage these
challenging demands new methods needs to be utilised within
the design process.
One of these methods is structural optimization,
which is being increasingly used to assist the design of technical
structures. This paper discusses the use of
Altair’s
software OptiStruct to assist within the concept
design of complex materials. Subject of investigation is a
helicopter
tailboom structure made of composite laminates.
The optimisation process is leading to a very efficient design
in technical
terms, considering also manufacturing aspects.
These distinguished results have been obtained in a short
time frame, not achievable
by a traditional concept design processes.
