Optimization Methodologies for SME's Elvis Kwassi, DINCCS Engineering design optimization of mechanical structures is nowadays essential in the mechanical industry (automotive, aeronautics ...). To remain competitive in the globalized world, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) need to create and design structures that in addition to complying specific mechanical performance, should be less expensive for their company. Engineers must then realize their structures forms that are a better compromise, between mechanical and functional performance, weight, manufacturing costs etc. In this article, we make a point on the different disciplines in design optimization of mechanical structures through an "automatic" approach. We propose an integrative approach to optimization in a functional design process with a methodological point of view. This will be illustrated by industrial examples to show us the problematic of the integration of design optimization process in SMEs.
